A Gentle Goodbye for Dozer
When I first met Dozer, his mum was doing everything she could to keep him comfortable. Like so many pet parents, she knew she wanted a home goodbye for her beautiful boy but wasn’t sure when the right time would be.
That’s one of the hardest parts — knowing when to let go — and it’s something I hear from families almost every day.
During our Quality of Life Home Visit, I spent time watching Dozer in his familiar environment. At home, pets often show little signs they might hide at the clinic — subtle changes in movement, breathing, or engagement. Together, we talked about what to look for, how to manage his comfort, and when it might be time to say goodbye.
A week later, Dozer’s mum reached out again. She knew it was time.
“From the moment she walked through the door I felt immediately at ease…
Over the next 45 minutes she could observe Dozer at home in his natural environment which is always different to when you go into a vet clinic. I learnt more about elderly pet care and hidden pain and suffering signs that I never knew before…
Taylah regularly checked in with me and it was so soothing to know she was thinking of us…
As for the goodbye, it was the most beautiful, calm and kind send off I could have ever wished for. Everything my boy deserved.”
Reading these words brought tears to my eyes. This is exactly why Gentle Home Goodbyes exists — to help families make informed, compassionate choices and to create a space for love, dignity, and peace when that moment arrives.
Dozer’s goodbye was filled with calmness, candles, and quiet love. His family surrounded him, and he drifted off gently — safe, warm, and deeply loved.
“If you are reading this, I feel your pain… don’t hesitate, pick up the phone and at least book a home consult. Being equipped with the information and tools you need is the best thing you can do for your loved ones.”
