Heartfelt Activities to Prepare You Before Saying Goodbye To Your Pet
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest things we face as pet parents. Finding ways to make their final moments meaningful and comforting for both them and your family can help ease the sadness. Here are some tender, thoughtful ideas to help prepare for saying goodbye to your cherished companion.
Write Them a Letter: Sometimes, expressing your feelings can be difficult and you might not be able to say the words out loud. Writing a heartfelt letter or card to your pet allows you to share your gratitude and love. You can keep it as a memento, or send it with your beloved pet on the next chapter of their journey.
Photos: Gather your favourite photos of your pet. You can create a slideshow for your pet’s home goodbye, or print some of them out. You might also want to capture some final moments with a DIY photo shoot or hire a professional photographer. These memories and keepsakes will hold special meaning in the future; they will remind you of the joy and laughter they brought into your life.
Favourite Foods: If your pet’s appetite allows, offer them their favourite foods & special food (they aren’t usually allowed to have) - for example: a cheeseburger, bbq, chocolate, pizza, or ice cream. These treats can bring joy to you and your pet during their final days.
Surround Them with Comfort: Ensure your pet has their favourite blanket, toy, or pillow nearby them. Their favourite things may be some of your clothing. These familiar comforts can help them feel safe and loved.
One Last Adventure: If your pet is up for it, take them on a simple adventure — a drive with the windows down or a weekend getaway to their favourite spot. Enjoy the moment together as a family.
Just Be Together: Sometimes the best thing you can do is simply be present. Sitting together, cuddling, or lying next to your pet can bring them peace in their final moments. Cherish the time spent just being together.
Plan for Aftercare: Planning your pet’s aftercare—whether cremation or burial—can make the process less overwhelming if you decide on what you would like to do to help commemorate them before the goodbye. Having these conversations beforehand helps your family prepare and decide how best to honor your pet.
