Grief vs. Mourning: (For Adults & Kids)
Grief vs. Mourning: A Kid-Friendly Guide to Understanding and Coping
Losing a pet is really hard. They aren’t just animals—they’re our best friends, cuddle buddies, and part of the family. When they’re no longer with us, it can make us feel all kinds of emotions. You might hear the words grief and mourning when people talk about loss. These two words mean different things, and knowing what they are can help you feel a little less alone.
What’s the Difference Between Grief and Mourning?
Grief is all the feelings you have inside when you miss your pet. It can feel like sadness, anger, or even like your heart hurts.
Mourning is what you do on the outside to show how much you love and miss your pet. It might be talking about them, drawing a picture, or keeping their favourite toy nearby.
Think of grief as what’s inside your heart and mourning as the way you show those feelings.
How Grief Feels
Grief can feel different for everyone. Some days you might feel okay, and other days you might feel really sad. You might cry, feel tired, or even feel mad that your pet is gone. All of these feelings are normal, and it’s okay to feel them.
What is Mourning?
Mourning helps you remember your pet in special ways. You might:
Look at photos of your pet and remember the fun times.
Share stories with your family about your pet’s silly or sweet moments.
Make something, like a drawing or a little keepsake, to remember them by.
Mourning lets you take your love for your pet and turn it into something beautiful.
How Can I Feel Better?
It’s okay to feel sad, but there are some things you can do to help your heart feel lighter:
Talk to Someone You Trust
Tell a parent, sibling, or friend how you’re feeling. Talking helps you feel supported.Create a Special Memory
Make a scrapbook, write a letter to your pet, or plant a flower in their honour.Hug It Out
Sometimes a big hug from someone you love can make you feel a little better.Remember the Happy Times
Think about all the fun you had with your pet, like the games you played or the funny things they did.
It’s Okay to Ask for Help
If you’re feeling really sad and don’t know what to do, tell a grown-up. They can help you find ways to feel better, like talking to a counsellor or joining a group where other kids share their feelings about losing a pet.
Your Pet’s Love Stays With You
Even though your pet isn’t here anymore, their love stays in your heart forever. It’s okay to feel sad, but it’s also okay to smile when you remember them. You’re not alone, and with time, your heart will start to feel a little lighter.
