The Benefits of Acupuncture for Senior Pets

As pets age, traditional medications may not be the best option, especially for those with compromised liver or kidney enzymes. Acupuncture offers a gentle, non-invasive alternative to manage pain, improve mobility, and support overall health without straining these vital organs. By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture promotes healing, enhances circulation, and supports energy flow, making it particularly beneficial for senior pets.

Here’s why acupuncture is ideal for senior pets with compromised organs:

  1. Pain Relief Without Medication:

Many traditional painkillers, such as Meloxicam or Paracetamol, can stress the kidneys and may not be safe for pets with kidney disease. Acupuncture offers pain relief without adding extra strain to these vital organs, making it a safer alternative for managing chronic pain from arthritis or other age-related conditions.

  2. Improved Circulation and Detoxification:

Acupuncture promotes blood flow and energy movement, helping flush toxins from the body while supporting liver and kidney detoxification. This is especially beneficial for pets who may struggle with medications like Gabapentin or CBD oil, which can place additional stress on the liver.

  3. Stress Reduction:

Acupuncture helps reduce stress, anxiety, and discomfort, which is especially important for aging pets who may experience cognitive decline or emotional shifts. It provides a non-invasive, calming therapy that can ease stress without the side effects of traditional medications.

  4. Supporting Organ Function:

Acupuncture has been shown to support liver and kidney functions, making it an excellent adjunct therapy for pets with compromised organ function. This can help reduce the need for medications that could potentially exacerbate liver or kidney problems.

Veterinary acupuncture is recognised by medical professionals as a valuable component of veterinary care. It is a safe, non-invasive option for pets who may not tolerate traditional medications. It can enhance your pet’s quality of life, helping them feel more comfortable and active as they age gracefully. (cats can have acupuncture too!)

A Personal Story: Mila's Journey with Acupuncture

My labrador, Mila, receives acupuncture every 1-2 weeks to support her neck pain, disc pain, tense muscles, and gastrointestinal condition, as well as to help her feel relaxed and support her organs while on medication. She’s usually a little reluctant to start, but once the needles are in, she feels better and is much happier.

When Mila’s liver enzymes were elevated, she couldn’t use her diazepam for sore muscles or CBD oil for pain. She also had stomach issues, which meant she couldn’t take Meloxicam. That’s when we turned to acupuncture for relief, and it made a significant difference. Alongside acupuncture, we also found that the Cycloid Vibration Therapy Mat helped Mila. She now gets this therapy 1-2 times a day, adding to her collection of treatments to support her health.
